Dr. Rachel Barnes (formerly Carpenter) joined the Needham family in July of 2024. She is originally from Shelby, North Carolina. Dr. Barnes received her Bachelor’s in Biology from UNCW. During her time at UNCW, she worked as a small animal veterinary assistant and volunteered for various wildlife rehabilitation centers. These opportunities sparked her passion for small/exotic animal medicine. She went on to earn her DVM at North Carolina State University where she became Fear Free Certified and earned the Proficiency in Reptile and Amphibian Medicine Award. She loves living in Wilmington with her husband and two rescue kitties. Dr. Barnes’ veterinary interests include wellness/preventative care, client education, surgery, exotic medicine, and wildlife rehabilitation. She especially loves helping to treat and rehab injured turtles. During her free time, she enjoys kayaking, hiking, spending time with her family, and relaxing by the beach.
